COVID-19 reports often understate the true prevalence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus within a community since they rely on hospitalization, diagnostic testing, and self reporting. Even low concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 RNA can be detected in untreated sewage, but measuring SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA in wastewater is not a simple process.
